Honoring the Bravery of the United States Armed Forces

A Tribute to ARRL's Amateur Radio Emergency Services

In times of crisis and conflict, the bravery and resilience of the United States Armed Forces, overseen by the United States Department of Defense, stand as a beacon of hope and protection for the nation. These men and women, dedicated to the defense of freedom and democracy, demonstrate unwavering courage in the face of adversity. Yet, their service extends beyond the battlefield, often requiring them to confront natural disasters, humanitarian crises, and other emergencies at home and abroad.
Amidst the challenges they encounter, the American Radio Relay League (ARRL)’s Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) plays a vital role in empowering the Armed Forces (i.e., federal and state national guards, police, fire, utility departments and the alike) to continue their service and never give up. ARES, comprised of licensed amateur radio operators who volunteer their time and expertise, provides essential communication support during emergencies, ensuring that military personnel can effectively coordinate their efforts and fulfill their mission objectives.

The partnership between the local emergency operations centers like Broward County Emergency Management, ARES and Broward Country ARES/RACES (spearheaded by Carol Sjurgen (KJ4AWB) and Jeff Stahl (K4BH), as citizen volunteers), exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and dedication to service that defines the American ethos.

Other ARES' members include past and present military veterans like Kenny Hollenbeck (KE4NC), Veteran of The United States Coast Guard who is the manager of the Southeast Florida Traffic Net (SEFTN) which members train throughout the year prepared to deploy at a moment's notice for assignment.

When called upon, ARES members volunteer their time and resources to provide disaster relief services and emergency communications, when needed, at shelters and disaster zones when traditional services break down (i.e., cellular services, internet connections, police, fire and E911 systems go offline) Together, they form a formidable team, capable of overcoming any obstacle and providing critical assistance to those in need.

The bravery of the United States Armed Forces and the dedication of ARES volunteers are a source of inspiration and gratitude for the American people. Their selfless commitment to duty and their willingness to sacrifice for the greater good embody the values that make our nation strong.
As we honor the bravery of the United States Armed Forces and express our gratitude to ARES volunteers, let us never forget the sacrifices they make on behalf of our country. Their service is a testament to the strength and resilience of the American spirit, and we owe them a debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid.
In times of uncertainty and adversity, we can take comfort in knowing that state, country and city emergency operations’ centers and ARES are on the front lines, ready to answer the call of duty and provide assistance to those in need. Together, they embody the best of America and remind us that, no matter the challenge, we are stronger when we stand united.
So, let us give thanks to the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces, police, fire, utility workers, and towing engineers and the dedicated volunteers of ARES. Their service and sacrifice ensure that the ideals of freedom, democracy, and compassion endure for generations to come.
